Ultimate Adventure 2022 with Dave Chappelle (AKA Dirthead Dave) and Clifton Slay rolling through the Southeast USA. We rolled in Dave's "Butter Jeep" recently built and untested which is normal for a lot of UA rigs. It held up well despite Clifton almost rolling it on the street and Dave doing wheelies and lay-overs to spice up the event. Follow more of Dave's misadventures at the Dirthead Shed on Youtube!
Big Rich Klein has amassed a colorful library of interviews from the off road community. When Clifton Slay decided to return to the dirt world full time again after a 12 years quest of being a search & rescue and street paramedic. Big Rich ran into Clifton at a Moab Easter Jeep Safari party and requested the scoop on his return. This 2 hour interview covers many(we estimate 23%)of Clifton's contributions and adventures in off road. Word on the trail is it's a good listen! Catch Big Rich and other characters and personalities here at his Youtube channel.
The 2022 SEMA Show in Las Vegas is a glitzy annual mish mash of automotive aftermarket, racing, media and OEM products. This world attended event is always a fun and exhausting event as it fills Las Vegas's convention center to the top. Although Clifton Slay has a history of having a presence at SEMA with his former companies, vehicles on display throughout and being awarded The Mother's Top Engineering award. In 2022 Clifton Joined Rick Pewe, Chris Collard, Liam Lafferty and Micheal Harrington as a contributing personality on their Gone GPN Youtube Channel to dig up some new products for the dirt world.
Clifton Slay's first 4x4, a 1983 CJ7(prior he had VW Baja bugs!)named "Bruiser"that became one of the most well know Jeeps of its era. Stated in Petersen's 4 Wheel & Off Road Magazine as one of the 10 most famous. From this Jeep came many firsts that were destined to become part of the hard core off road DNA. 10" shortened body with competition cut corners, Stinger Bumper, quarter elliptical and coilover suspension, full hydraulic steering, boat side rockers, prototype Atlas transfer case, one of the first non circle track bead lock wheels, lexan and aluminum paneled cage and automatic transmission swap, cromealloy octogonal axle housings with soft gears, gears and prototype competition compound tires. The Bruiser competed in the 2000 Warn National Rock crawling Championship ultimately tying Ned Bacon in a losing effort. The Bruiser Jeep was the first documented vehicle to enter Moab Utah's infamous bowl located just above Micky's Hot Tub on Hell's Revenge. Clifton rolled upside down under water which gave it the moniker "Car Wash". JP magazine created a centerfold poster of the failed but dramatic event. Although Clifton was known for the first strike at this formidable obstacle, it was actually Nick Cappa who attempted it first and shamed Clifton into the attempt. Clifton later built Suicide Sally specifically to conquer this massive hole with a 129" wheelbase and 502 big block. Unfortunately, the Bruiser was stolen just 30 days prior to the 2001 Ultimate Adventure. Clifton and the Avalanche Engineering crew built the 30 Day CJ that adorned the cover of JP Magazine that year since the Bruiser could not make it. The Bruiser was recovered, but never re-built. Clifton still owns and stores the chassis.
